Boney Fields & The Bone's Project - Live At Jazz A Vienne (2008)

Shakin' your bones
The pulse of the bass shakes your bones from the first note. This must be the band's secret project hidden behind its name : shaking your bones ! Halfway between funk and jazz fusion (or jazz-rock like we used to say in the 1970s), Mike Armoogum delivers a big sound and infernal beat with his rhythmic accomplice Enrico Mattioli on drums. The outstanding Hervé Samb is hammering a killing groove on his guitar strings while the horns blow hell hot riffs, and Jerry Leonide gets some vintage 1970s Herbie Hancock accents on his “synthesizered” keyboard.

From his stand, trumpet player, singer, band conductor, master of ceremony Boney Fields is putting out a show that could almost make James Brown suddenly pass for a novice. Fields heats up the audience as much as his own musicians, like when he's directing Samb to slow down then re-accelerate the tempo at the end of the 13-minute long killer “Late Comer”.

At Onurblues & Blue Dragon, we love this guy, he's like an old friend and BD posted five of his six albums to date. Fields blends blues, soul, R'n'B, brassy jazz and hip-hop into an irresistible funky gumbo that blows you off your shoes. No matter if you end up barefoot, you just ask for more, to hell with shoes !

His musicians, a tight multinational group based in France (melting pot of African and Caribbean music in particular), are all top instrumentalists of different origins : USA, Senegal, Mauritius, France, Martinique, Italy...

Fields jazzy funk fusion is all but intellectual, it speaks to the primal rhythmic instinct of man without superfluous question. But his soulful voice can also make him tender at times with equal appeal, like on “Tough Pill” for example.

Five tracks are over six minutes leaving space for the musicians to express their exciting skills : Fields himself on trumpet, Nadege Dumas on sax, Pierre Chabrèle on trombone, Leonide on keyboards, Mattioli on drums, and the two phenoms of the band, the incredible Armoogum on bass and Samb on guitar.

On half of the tracks, master of ceremony Fields calls each one up front for solos before the whole band joins back while the groove doesn't slow down for a single second, and constantly asks support from the audience (“Are you ready ?!) as on “Funny How Time Slips Away” and “Get Up & Stand Out”.

On the hypnotic reggae-funk fusion “Live In Peace”, Fields and Samb go through a fine trumpet-guitar duel, while the highly funky hip-hop “Red Wolf” features great trombone from Chabrèle and sax from Dumas, with Fields trying to make the audience respond. Samb's guitar is raging on “Hard Work”, and “Ain't Doing Too Bad”, featuring lady singer Jean Carpenter (apparently Fields' sweetheart), puts an end to this breathless show. Fields introduces again his musicians carefully, precising for each one his/her geographical roots.

All along the concert he shows sincere love and respect for them, asking several times the audience to “put their hands together” for them, eager to give his band mates all the recognition they deserve, like a father really proud of his children.

The Jazz à Vienne festival has a very special mojo which draws the best of the carefully selected featured acts. The mojo worked brilliantly on Fields and his Bone's project band. A black cat bone project ! Probably their most thrilling album so far.

With his bowler topping his locks, fancy jackets, golden trumpet and apparently unlimited stock of energy, Fields and his musicians deliver here 74 minutes of pure exhilarating animal pleasure ! Turn up the volume to unreasonable level and let the funk shake your bones and guide your feet ! ■
